Woven Picot Fish Scales
Woven picots combine simple hand embroidery with weaving for a deceptively easy wool-appliqué embellishment made exclusively from thread.
In this class, students will learn to make staggered rows of this fun-to-sew stitch using a wide range of threads to resemble the scales of a fish. The stitch also lends itself to flower petals or bird feathers, which students may choose to work on if they prefer. Instructor-provided kit includes everything needed to complete one fish block:
- precut wool fish shape
- wool for background
- assortment of cotton and rayon embroidery threads, hand-dyed to coordinate with each other
Students need only bring thread snips! Depending on time and student skill level, we can also explore other stitches and couching techniques for detailing fins, tails, eyes, and more. Finished items may be framed or incorporated into a wallhanging, pillow, etc.
The woven picot stitch enables use of interesting textured threads not normally used for embroidery, so (when not taught in a shop) the class is accompanied by my Thread Treasure Chest for your shopping and stitching delight!
